Jeju

YESTERDAY:

  • woke up a bit late
  • head to airport with Jackie’s mom
    • this car was finally free of smoke!
    • driver recognized my Peak Design bag
    • apparently he’s an amateur photographer
  • got Jackie’s mom into a lounge
    • noodle soup was nice
  • flight back to HK went smoothly
    • traded seats so that two ladies could sit together
  • parted ways with Jackie’s mom in HK
  • passed security heading back into international terminal
    • they got a bit concerned with the tire sensor samples
    • somehow, pointing out that I have a wife waiting for me helped …?
    • also needed convincing that they weren’t rechargeable
  • hung out in the Kyra lounge again
    • didn’t realize there was a back section with phone booths
    • took a call with Sunjay
  • head to a different lounge
    • actually better food, but a bit more bustly
  • didn’t realize the train stops running after 1 am
  • ended up scrambling to walk to a bus stop
    • then arrived just as the bus departed …
    • still ended up at the gate on time
  • arrived in Jeju around 6:30 am

TODAY:

  • rather chilly in Jeju!
  • also kind of cloudy
  • head to hotel
    • Uber works nicely here, but it just calls a local cab
    • Google Maps driving/walking directions don’t work though
    • dropped off bags at hotel
  • head to a local cafe
    • very peaceful
  • drop by a massage place
    • lady wasn’t expecting guests and had to call for help
    • got some international gateway testing done in the meantime
    • pretty decent massages
    • she did give me a cramp in my calf though
  • Jackie wanted to walk to an arboretum
    • uphill was actually too exhausting for me :(
    • pretty sure I have bronchitis
  • lunch at a Jeju bbq pork place
    • lady was true to the reviews and showed us how to wrap the pork in different leaves
  • head back to hotel
    • took a nap on a bench for an hour
  • got into our hotel room!
    • took a massive nap
    • finished a bit more gateway testing
  • found a noodle soup restaurant
    • uber so cheap here
    • also the roads are two-way but only fit one car
    • folks park on both sides of the street
    • pedestrians right in the middle …
  • noodle soup with generous pork slices
    • very tasty
  • head back to rest

LEARNINGS:

  • apparently the Google Maps issue is due to Korea unwilling to allow Google to process GPS data outside the country
    • due to them technically being in a state of war
